The big cat was injured after being hit with sticks by onlookers. it will be released in Wild After proper care and treatment, forest officials said.
The forest department had earlier laid a trap to catch the leopard, which was causing havoc in the area by hunting people’s cattle. To lure the big cat, a goat was tied up in an iron cage camouflaged as live bait. The leopard fell for the bait and got trapped in the iron cage.
After the leopard was trapped, curious people from nearby villages came to see it. Before the forest staff could reach, a section of the crowd also attacked the animal and hit it with sticks, injuring it.
“We took the leopard to Jeypore reserve forest for release but during a routine health checkup by the wildlife doctor, it was found that the animal was injured. So we decided to shift him to Kaziranga Rehabilitation Centre. It will be released into its natural habitat after proper treatment and recovery, said a forest official.
