Voting began in the early hours of Wednesday for the high-stakes assembly elections in Karnataka, where the ruling BJP is eyeing script history by retaining its southern stronghold, while a combative Congress seeks a comeback ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. .

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged the people of Karnataka to vote in large numbers to make it a progressive and ’40 per cent commission-free’ state.

Voting began early Wednesday for the high-stakes assembly elections in Karnataka, where the ruling BJP seeks to create history by retaining its southern bastion, while a combative Congress seeks a comeback ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

In a tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said, “Vote for Karnataka… 5 for guarantees, for women’s rights, for employment of youth, for upliftment of poor. Come, vote in large numbers.” Using the ‘Congress Winning 150’ hashtag, Gandhi tweeted in Hindi, “Let’s together build a 40%-commission-free, progressive Karnataka.”

He also shared a graphic with five guarantees of the Congress.

Polling is being held for 224 seats in what is being seen primarily as a triangular contest between the ruling BJP, the Congress and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s Janata Dal (Secular).

The polling, which began at 7 am amid tight security, will continue till 6 pm.
