The recent development of Google starting talks with domestic suppliers comes after a meeting between the Indian Minister of Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnavand Google CEO Sundar Pichai last month. The two reportedly discussed the India manufacturing drive, talking about the possibility of producing Google devices in India to improve the company’s manufacturing presence in the country.
According to a Bloomberg report, citing unnamed sources, Google is in early preliminary discussions with Lava International Limited, Dixon Technologies India Limited, and India FIH (the Indian unit of Foxconn Technology Group).
The companies that are being considered as partners have received financial incentives under the government’s production-linked scheme, which has helped boost manufacturing in India, attracting foreign manufacturers to set up production facilities in the country.
While India has been an important market for its services, it has been on the sidelines when it comes to hardware, as the country has been dominated by affordable Chinese players.
Google launched its first Pixel in India. However, in later years, it started feeling the heat from Chinese manufacturers, bringing only the affordable Pixel ‘A series model to the country. It was only last year when the company brought its Pixel 7. series after a gap of four years in India.
Pixel phones have been on the slightly higher side of the price spectrum, even the Pixel ‘A series, and the move to shift production to India could be seen as a strategy to cut some costs, which in turn can help. The company sells more pixels in India.
According to sources, Google’s operating chief of consumer hardware division Ana Corrales and senior director of global sustainable product operations Maggie Wei were among the key executives who recently visited India for partnership talks.
According to Counterpoint Research, Google manufactured nearly 9 million units of Pixel phones last year at facilities in China and Vietnam. If the discussions go on, a major part of the production could be shifted to India.
If the plan is successful, then not only the phone, but Google is also planning to make other hardware products in India. However, the discussions are still at a very early stage, and there is a possibility that the company may choose not to go ahead with the plan.
