In his letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former state unit chief and minister Thorat has also said that he is not being consulted before taking decisions.

Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat has written to the party’s central leadership citing his inability to work with its Maharashtra unit chief Nana Patole, as claimed by an aide of Nana Patole towards him on Monday.

The aide said that in his letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former state unit chief and minister Thorat has also said that he is not consulted before taking decisions here.

The matter came to light after the then Nashik MLC Sudhir Tambe, who is Thorat’s brother-in-law, refused to contest the election despite being the official candidate of the Congress, forcing his son Satyajit Tambe to contest as an independent. Satyajit Tambe won the election, the results of which were announced on 2 February.

Sources said that while the episode caused embarrassment to the Congress, the silence of Thorat, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, was seen as tacit support for the Tambe father-son duo.

While Thorat did not participate in Satyajit Tambe’s campaign for the elections to be held on 30 January, several relatives of the former were present. The Congress has suspended Sudhir Tambe and Satyajit Tambe from the party for rigging the MLC polls.

In his letter to the Congress leadership, Thorat has expressed his inability to work with state president Nana Patole, saying it would be difficult to work with him if he (Patole) harbors so much anger against him. Thorat has also complained of not being consulted during decision-making,” the close aide claimed.

Thorat has also said that he was insulted by the (state) party leadership and statements were made against his family on the (copper) issue, the aide said, quoting the letter.

The letter to Kharge further states that some office-bearers of Ahmednagar were punished over the issue.

Patole disbanded the Ahmednagar district committee of the Congress on 26 January for “anti-party activities” after some of its members campaigned for Satyajit Tambe instead of the candidate the party officially supported.
