In Mumbai, five minor boys entered Marve Creek in suburban Malad early in the morning. While two of them were rescued, three others went missing, a fire brigade official said. Till night no trace of all three could be found.

At least seven people, including three boys, are feared drowned in two separate incidents in Maharashtra’s Mumbai and Chandrapur districts on Sunday, officials said. In Mumbai, five minor boys entered Marve Creek in suburban Malad early in the morning.

While two of them were rescued, three others went missing, a fire brigade official said. All three could not be traced till night. In eastern Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, four members of a group enjoying a picnic fell into the Ghodajeri lake, about 106 km from the district headquarters, while taking a selfie at around 4.30 pm, a police official said.

Police and disaster management teams launched a search operation to trace the four people, including a 17-year-old boy, the official said, adding that the water level in the lake has risen due to rains in the area. The search operation was suspended on Sunday night due to poor light and inclement weather.

In Mumbai’s Marve, two of the five boys, aged 13 and 16, were rescued from the creek by some people before the fire brigade arrived, the official said. Three others – two aged 12 and one 13 – are missing, he said.

Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, coast guard, navy divers, ward staff and an ambulance rushed to the spot, the official said. A helicopter was also involved in the search operation, which was called off in the evening.
