In recent times, Indian cinema has witnessed a surge in the production of biopics, particularly focusing on political leaders. Notable examples include Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivi, Ramya Krishnan’s Queen and Vivek Oberoi’s PM Narendra Modi. Among these, the 2019 film Yatra, featuring Mammootty, explored the life of YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Now, the eagerly awaited sequel, Yatra 2, is set to impress audiences, with its release scheduled for February 8.

Directed by Mahi V Raghav, Yatra delved into the inspiring journey of YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who served as the Chief Minister from May 2004 to June 2009 and belonged to the Indian National Congress. The film centred around his impactful padayatra, a political journey to connect with the common people and understand their struggles. Yatra received acclaim for its portrayal of YSR’s life and political contributions. Originally shot in Telugu, it was later dubbed and released in Tamil, Malayalam and other languages.

The sequel, Yatra 2, is generating significant buzz ahead of its release. The trailer, recently unveiled by the makers, promises an engaging narrative. Reports suggest that the film will primarily focus on the period from YSR’s demise to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy assuming power. Jiiva will play the crucial role of Mohan Reddy, depicting the political developments in Andhra Pradesh after Rajasekhara Reddy’s passing.

One user remarked, “Goosebumps loading as Mammootty and Jiiva will showcase their incredible work. Waiting for February 8.” Another praised Mammootty as ‘the face of Indian cinema,’ predicting the film to be a blockbuster.
