Man held with banned tobacco products of Rs 5 lakh in Palghar | Thane News – Times of India

PALGHAR: A 30-year-old man from Dahanu, Palghar, was apprehended by law enforcement officials after they discovered prohibited tobacco products worth Rs 5.06 lakh in his possession on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, according to a spokesperson on Monday.
The police had set up a nakabandi (security blockade) in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and on Saturday evening, they noticed a suspicious car traveling from Umbargaon towards Mumbai on the highway and decided to stop it.
Upon inspection, the authorities discovered various brands of tobacco products concealed in gunny bags inside the vehicle and promptly confiscated them. The police arrested the car’s occupant, a resident of Dahanu in Palghar, and charged him under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Food and Drug Administration regulations.
It is important to note that since 2012, the sale and consumption of gutka, scented, and flavored tobacco has been prohibited in the state of Maharashtra.
