According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the girls who were killed were 19, 14 and 13 years old.
Gonzalez said the man attacked the 12-year-old girl and told her to run out of the house. She ran away holding the one-year-old girl.
“She ran out of the house without clothes” to a neighbor, who called Galena Park police.
“She managed to think it over, thankfully, and grabbed the one-year-old when she ran outside,” Gonzalez said.
According to a statement from Galena Park police, both girls were hospitalized for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. The investigation has been handed over to the District President.
Officials did not immediately return a message to The Associated Press for additional comment on Sunday.
Gonzalez said the man’s girlfriend was the mother of a 12-year-old and a 19-year-old boy. The elder victim was the mother of the child and was pregnant. The police station chief told that the girlfriend was not at home at the time of the shooting.
The sheriff said authorities were working to determine the relationship of the other two teens who were shot but described them as family members.
Gonzalez offered no suspected motive for the shooting, saying “It doesn’t make any sense, it’s all sad.”
The US has seen a deadlier start to 2023, including six mass murders in a three-week period in January, according to the Associated Press/USA Today database. It defines a mass murder as the death of four or more people, not involving the perpetrator.
