A 58-year-old man was caught by some people on Thursday at Sanshi bus stand in Dharwad, Karnataka. People alleged that she was wearing a burqa to take advantage of Shakti Yojana, a free bus ride for women.

The man, Veerbhadra Ningayya, was spotted behaving like a man when he was sitting at the bus stand wearing a burqa, after which they informed the police. The police released this person after giving a warning after questioning.

A photocopy of the woman’s Aadhaar card was also found with the accused.
Virbhadra was searched after the arrival of the police, in which a photocopy of a woman’s Aadhaar card was also found with him. During enquiry, it was revealed that the person was a resident of Godageri village in Vijayapura district. He came to Sanshi from Bangalore by train. After coming to the bus stand here, he found a bag inside which was a burqa.

Virbhadra told the police that he wore the burqa so that he could beg at the bus stand.

What is Karnataka’s free bus service i.e. Shakti Yojana
Free bus service for women has been implemented in Karnataka. Shakti Yojana was launched on 11th June 2023. Implementing this service was one of the five poll promises of the Congress ahead of the assembly elections in Karnataka. The objective of which is to empower women financially by providing them free bus service.

Under this scheme, women can travel free of cost only in Karnataka Road Transport buses. The state government says that this will benefit 42 lakh women of the state.
