MANAGALURU: The Dakshina Kannada district administration organized a commemoration program in memory of the 158 victims of the May 22, 2010 tragedy. Air India Express Flight 812 Tragedy.
The anniversary of the tragedy was observed on Monday at a memorial built for the victims on the banks of Falguni river near Tanirbawi here. DC Sun Kumar M R, Mangaluru Municipal Corporation (MCC) Commissioner K Channabasappa, DHO Dr. Kishore Kumar M, Officers of Mangaluru International Airport, New Mangalore Port Authority Others paid tribute to the martyrs at the memorial.
Harishchandra, the victim’s father, recalled how he could identify his daughter’s body through a ring found on the body. “I came to know about the plane crash when I was going to pick him up from the airport. Those memories are fresh in my mind even after 13 years.
The DC said that the district administration is with the families of the victims. “It is our duty to pay homage to those killed in the plane crash. We pray for the peace of the departed souls and assure that we are with the next of kin of those killed in the accident.”
Air India Express flight 812 from Dubai to Mangaluru crashed while landing at Mangalore airport. Of the 166 passengers and crew on board, 158 were killed in the crash and eight survived.
The bodies of 12 of the 158 victims have not been identified. The 12 victims were cremated on the banks of the Falguni river and a memorial was constructed at the site.
