Manipur: A place where Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was to inaugurate an open gym and a sports facility on Friday (today), was set on fire by a mob on Thursday evening.

According to reports, an unruly mob set fire to the place where preparations were being made for the chief minister’s program at New Lamka in Churachandpur district at around 9 pm.

Though the police swung into action quickly, some damage had already been done to the venue. Reports said hundreds of chairs were burnt, while a portion of the open gym to be inaugurated by the chief minister was also torched.

Police said the open gym set up at PT Sports Complex in New Lamka would be inaugurated by Biren Singh on Friday afternoon.

Apart from the inauguration of the open gym, Biren is also scheduled to attend another function organized by a local at Sadbhavna Mandap.

The mob attack took place when the platform of indigenous tribal leaders called for a total Churachandpur bandh from 8 am to 4 pm.
