New Delhi: The government on Sunday constituted a three-member inquiry commission to probe the incidents. Manipur violence.
The panel will be headed by former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Justice Ajay Lamba, Other members of the commission have retired I a s officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS Officer Alok Prabhakar.
The Commission shall inquire into the sequence of events which led to all the facts relating to such violence and see whether there was any lapse or dereliction of duty in this regard on the part of any responsible officers/persons.
It will also examine the adequacy of administrative measures taken to prevent and deal with violence and riots.
The inquiry to be conducted by the Commission shall also inquire into the complaints or allegations which may be made before it by any person or association
The panel needs to submit its report to the central government at the earliest, but not later than six months.
Further, the Commission may, however, if it thinks fit, submit an interim report to the Central Government before the said date.
Manipur has been witnessing sporadic violence since the ethnic conflict broke out on 3 May. The death toll in the clashes has crossed 80
Caste violence broke out for the first time after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The violence was preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserved forest land, which led to several smaller agitations.
