Belagavi: With the election model code of conduct coming to effect, nearly all licenced firearms, including guns and pistols, have been surrendered to the police department.
Currently, a total of 7,875 licensed weapons have been deposited in Belagavi district, marking the second-highest number in the state after Bengaluru. SP Bhimashankar Guled said almost all firearms have been handed over to the authorities.
Belagavi district has the highest number of licenced weapons after Bengaluru. Out of 7,875 licenced weapons, there are 1,556 weapons under the jurisdiction of the Belagavi commissioner of police and 6,319 under the district superintendent of police.
Of the 1,539 weapons licenced under the office of the city police commissioner, Kakati police has the highest number of weapons. It is followed by Malmaruti and Belagavi rural stations.
Single-barrel guns, double-barrel guns and pistols have increased among the licenced weapons. Single-barrel and double-barrel guns are kept under licence for crop protection. Pistols are kept for self-defence. Those living in single households are more likely to own a licensed gun.
Police said 99% of the weapons have been surrendered by people to date. If there is any objection, if there is a dire need for the weapon for self-defence, then a report can be submitted to the superintendent of police with relevant supporting documents, officials said.
Police officials said officers and staff engaged in government service need not surrender their weapons.
The order also does not apply to licensees obtained by nationalised banks, private banks for the safety of financial institutions.
SP Guled said that all necessary measures have been taken for peaceful conduct of elections.
All the surrendered weapons will be kept in the station till the election process is completed, he added.
