Meta and LG have announced a collaboration to develop next-generation Extended Reality experiences moving forward. Here’s what it means.

In the midst of escalating competition in the global headset market, Meta and LG revealed their collaboration on Tuesday to double down on their efforts in extended reality (XR) ventures.

It’s worth noting that Meta has a rich history of producing both VR (virtual reality) and MR (mixed-reality) products under its Meta Quest product line, with recent successes such as the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. With this strategic partnership, both companies intend to leverage and integrate their strengths across a range of products, services, and platforms.

This announcement follows a recent meeting between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, LG CEO William Cho, and LG President Park Hyoing-sei in Seoul, Korea. During this meeting, top management reportedly explored Meta’s cutting-edge technology, including the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Meta Quest 3 headset, and Meta’s suite of Large Language Models (LLMs).

“LG envisions that by bringing together Meta’s platform with its own content/service capabilities from its TV business, a distinctive ecosystem can be forged in the XR domain, which is one of the company’s new business areas,” LG said. It added that the “fusion of Meta’s diverse core technological elements with LG’s cutting-edge product and quality capabilities promises significant synergies in next-gen XR device development.”

It is interesting to note that earlier reports have hinted Meta and LG’s collaborative efforts in developing the next generation Meta Quest Pro headset to better compete with the likes of Apple, now that it has launched its Vision Pro headset. Initially reported by the South Korean newspaper Maeil Business, the publication suggests the possibility of witnessing an LG-manufactured headset featuring LG displays, batteries, and other LG Innotek components. This potential high-end headset, and perhaps a competitor to the Vision Pro, is expected to launch in 2025, with an anticipated cost exceeding $2,000.
