Meta Verified, Meta’s subscription service—which gives you a verified blue checkmark and tons of other benefits, including additional account security—is now available to Indian users, for a monthly fee.

Available for Rs 699 for iOS and Android users, Meta Verified will authenticate accounts using a government ID proof instead of ‘notability’ as a factor.

The company is also planning to introduce a Rs 599 price tag for web users soon.

Of course, the primary incentive for people to subscribe is the coveted ‘blue tick’, which has become aspirational at this point. According to Meta, users will now have “greater protection from impersonation with proactive account monitoring for impersonators who may be targeting people with a growing online audience.”

Currently verified users in the country – those verified to be ‘notable’ – will retain their checkmarks for free, unlike Twitter, which removed all ‘legacy’ checkmarks and made users pay Rs 900/month for Twitter Blue Asked to do. They want a checkmark. And, to get the checkmark, notably, Meta is asking users Rs 300 less than Twitter – and that may sound more attractive to most Indian users.

Support is currently limited to English users only, but the company has claimed that Hindu users will also get support in the “coming months”.

“We want to create a subscription offering that is valuable to everyone, including creators, businesses and our community at large. As part of this vision, we are evolving the meaning of verified accounts across our apps,” the company said.

What You Need to Verify: Who’s Eligible, Requirements and More

Firstly, to be eligible to subscribe to the Meta Verified service, users must be at least 18 years of age or older and must possess a government-issued ID card, such as an Aadhaar card or a driving license.

“Applicants are then required to submit a government ID that matches the profile name and photo of the Facebook or Instagram account they are applying for,” the company said.

At this point, only individuals can be verified, not businesses.
