Metrowater Ramps Up Tanker Trips To Meet Rising Demand | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: Metrowater has increased its daily tanker water supply trips from 1,13,700 trips to 1,15,800 trips due to increased demand for treated drinking water. To meet the increasing demand, the agency has hired 20 additional trucks.
A senior Metrowater engineer said the demand for treated, purified drinking water is on the rise, mainly in the added areas where the agency is unable to provide piped supply connections. In such areas, the demand for ‘Dial M for Metrowater’ had increased, he said.
In March, 61,000 trips were made to fill the tanks kept on the streets, compared to 60,700 trips in Jan. Similarly, for the paid consumers, which are mostly govt agencies and organisations, 22,300 trips were operated daily in Jan. This increased to 24,800 trips each day in March. Under the dial for water, the number of trips was 23,900 in Jan, which increased to 30,000 trips a day, the official said.
Talking about the free supply of water to streets and filling up of water in tanks kept in neighbourhoods, another official said depending upon the demand, the water supply is done either daily or on alternative days.
Metrowater, by increasing the number of trips of its tanker truck supply, indirectly reduced the dominance of private water tanker suppliers, especially in the added areas.
The residential localities on the Rajiv Gandhi Road (Old Mahabalipuram Road) are dependent on private water suppliers, as the groundwater along this stretch is saline, which cannot be used for any domestic purposes, said the official.
Cutting down on the on the spread of private tanker trucks also helps in preventing illegal tapping of water in rural areas. This is an indirect benefit of Metrowater increasing its tanker supply, the official said.
Unlike private operators, Metrowater supplies potable drinking water procured from the reservoirs and wells taken on lease.
