Microsoft expanding its long-standing partnership with OpenAI through a new “multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment”. The investment comes just weeks after Microsoft was rumored to be investing billions in OpenAI, as makers of popular AI tools chatgpt and DALL-E 2. This is Microsoft’s third investment in the company. Microsoft first invested in OpenAI in the year 2019 and again in 2021. The New York Times noted that it has “quietly” invested an additional $2 billion since that initial round.

Microsoft hasn’t disclosed how much it has invested in OpenAI. A Bloomberg report claimed that Microsoft is investing $10 billion over “multiple years”.

The deal will see Microsoft increase its investment in the development and deployment of supercomputing systems to aid in OpenAI’s research. A key part of the deal is that Microsoft is the exclusive cloud partner for OpenAI, and that the company’s cloud services will power all OpenAI workloads across products, API services and research.

Microsoft also plans to deploy OpenAI’s model in a variety of consumer and enterprise products. The company is preparing to challenge Google with ChatGPT integration in Bing search results. Some reports also claim that Microsoft could receive 75 percent of OpenAI’s profits until it gets its investment returns and a 49 percent stake in the company.
