The Supreme Court will hear today Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea in a defamation case related to the Modi surname remark. The Gujarat High Court had dismissed a petition seeking a stay on Rahul Gandhi’s sentence. After this, the former Congress President challenged the decision of the High Court in the apex court.

A bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice PK Mishra will hear the matter. A bench of CJI Justice DY Chandrachud had on July 18 agreed to hear Gandhi’s plea after mentioning the matter to senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi and seeking urgent hearing. In his appeal, Rahul Gandhi has said that if the July 7 Gujarat High Court judgment is not stayed, it will stifle free speech, expression, thought and statement.
