Salem: Pointing out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been using Indian Air Force (IAF) choppers for his election campaign as well as public meetings even after the enforcement of the model code of conduct, The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) on Tuesday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take stern action against Modi.
Talking to TOI, TNCC spokesperson P V Senthil said former Prime Minister the late Indira Gandhi was disqualified by the Election Commission of India in 1975 for using IAF choppers for election campaign. “As per the model code of conduct, any electoral person should not use government machinery for campaigning purposes,” he stated. Pointing out that the Salem municipal corporation had withdrawn the vehicles allotted to the city mayor and deputy mayor, he said the same rule was applicable to Modi as well. Senthil also urged the ECI to explain whether the BJP was paying any rental for the IAF choppers. “If so, other party leaders should also be allowed to follow suit so that the IAF will get rental revenue.” TNN
