Mother of 6-year-old US boy who shot teacher charged with federal crimes

The mother of a six-year-old boy who shot his teacher in the US has been charged with felony federal gun offences. nbc news, The incident took place in January this year when the boy went to his school in Virginia carrying a pistol and opened fire in the classroom. The outlet further stated that the teacher was taken into custody after he was seriously injured by the gunshot. Deja Taylor, his mother, was indicted by a grand jury in April on charges of child neglect and negligent discharge of a loaded firearm with intent to endanger a child.

On Monday, a district court in Virginia charged a 25-year-old man with two charges: being an unlawful user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm and making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm.

Ms. Taylor apologized to the teacher and said she was responsible for her son’s access to the handgun. However, the woman said she was not clear how the boy got hold of it.

A trial is due to begin on August 15, reported nbc news,

Abigail Zwerner, the teacher who was shot, carried her class of about 20 students to safety while still wounded. She filed a $40 million lawsuit against officials at Richneck Elementary School, alleging the boy had a gun and ignored three warnings of disturbing behavior.

The school has sought to dismiss the lawsuit, saying that the matter will be addressed as a worker’s compensation matter.

Given the boy’s age, the case shocked the United States amid a growing number of school shooting incidents. The boy apparently retrieved his mother’s gun from a closet.
