A 23-year-old man was arrested from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore for allegedly raping a woman and pressuring her to convert, police said on Monday.

Khajrana police station in-charge Dinesh Verma told reporters that the man was arrested under provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 2021, which prohibits conversion by force or fraud, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Verma, citing the FIR, said the complainant was living with the man “after falling in the trap of love on the pretext of marriage”.

She alleged that the man was pressurizing her to change her religion and was mentally torturing her.

The woman said that she and the man had recently gone to watch ‘The Kerala Story’. After watching the film, there was an argument between the two and after fighting, the young man left her. He approached the police on May 19 and lodged an FIR,” said the police officer.

He told that the accused youth is educated up to class 12th and is unemployed, while the victim woman is highly educated and works in a private company.

“All the allegations are being thoroughly investigated,” Verma said.
