According to BJP sources, Arun Singh, the party’s national general secretary and in-charge of Karnataka, has already taken the opinion of the newly elected MLAs.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai said that by Sunday it would be known who would be the leader of the opposition in the state assembly. According to party sources, the BJP Legislature Party is likely to meet on Sunday to elect its leader, who will also be the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, ahead of the Legislature session beginning July 3.

Responding to a question on who would be the leader of the opposition, Bommai told reporters in Chikkamagaluru on Saturday, “It will definitely be known tomorrow evening.”

According to BJP sources, Arun Singh, the party’s national general secretary and in-charge of Karnataka, has already taken the opinion of the newly elected MLAs and based on this and the outcome of discussions with the BJP national leadership, a new leader will be selected. Chances are. ,

Bommai and senior leader and former Union Minister Basanagouda Patil Yatnal are said to be frontrunners for the post.

Questions were raised from several quarters, including the ruling Congress, over the BJP’s delay in electing the Leader of the Opposition. Apart from this, there were also criticisms alleging the lack of a strong or capable face and infighting in the BJP for the delay in the appointment.

However, several BJP leaders, including Bommai, hit back saying that the leader of the opposition would be elected before the full assembly session, as has been the tradition.
