Now, civic body to get 100 e-autos for waste collection Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: Using funds from smart city Under the project, the Municipal Corporation will buy 100 e-carts for garbage collection in the city. The purchase of the e-carts is part of the civic body’s ongoing efforts to gradually reduce emissions in the city and incorporate eco-friendly methods in waste management.
Earlier in 2022, the civic body had rolled out 25 e-carts for waste management in the city. Under the detailed project report prepared under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), the corporation had purchased electric vehicles at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.
The e-carts will be mainly used for transportation of non-biodegradable waste and dry leaves in 25 health circles. With the introduction of e-carts, the corporation aims to phase out diesel-run pickup autos, which were used to transport waste.
Health officials said that diesel autos lead to carbon emissions and also drain the financial resources of the corporation. In addition, maintenance expenses are also required continuously. The civic body had earlier received five e-carts of a different design as part of a corporate social responsibility initiative.
The e-carts will be procured from the Government e Marketplace (GeM) portal by Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Limited. has also tied up with the corporation KSRTC Procuring 100 e-buses under the Smart City project with an aim to ensure emission free transport in the city.
Budget The Corporation for 2023-24 presented in the Council has emphasized on making Thiruvananthapuram carbon neutral by 2035. It is envisioned as a convergence of centrally sponsored schemes and state government initiatives.
Under the Smart City project, the civic body has already installed solar power plants in five buildings, including the assembly complex. The civic body plans to generate 10.2 MW of electricity with the installation of solar power plants in over 200 buildings in the city.
The capacity of the power plant in the Vidhan Sabha is 395kw. Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Limited aims to harness the maximum potential from solar power and achieve 10% of the total electricity demand within the ABD (Area Based Development) area. The projects ensure guaranteed annual generation of solar power with a minimum guaranteed 1,350 units per kWh per year during the first five years of operation of KSEBL Grid Synchronization.
SCTL has already implemented projects in State Central Library, Palayam (39 KW). Kerala University Library, Palayam (85KW), Government College for Women, Vazuthcaud (82 KW), and Government Central High School, Attakulangara (4KW).
All solar projects are grid connected and with islanding and disconnection protection, which saves on battery purchase and maintenance costs.
