Official sources said the presence of Vibrio cholerae bacteria was found in three of the nine rectal swab samples of patients in the district.
Vibrio cholera bacteria were found in the faeces of three patients from Dudukabahal village, one of the many affected villages in the block. Bacteria have also been found in the water used by the villagers.
Rayagada Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Lalmohan Routray also confirmed that the disease is spreading through contaminated water.
Director, Public Health, Niranjan Mishra said: “The government has taken several measures to contain the spread of cholera by opening two temporary medical camps in the affected areas of Kashipur block. Medical teams arrived and people went door-to-door to find out. There are several measures taken by the government to stop the spread of cholera. No one has any symptoms.”
Mishra said seven people have died so far, while around 100 others are infected with the water-borne disease.
As the cases of cholera are increasing in Rayagada, the district administrations of neighboring Koraput and Kalahandi have also been put on alert and should intervene immediately if anyone shows symptoms.
Many people were being treated at Community Health Center at Kashipur, Primary Health Center at Tikiri, District Headquarter Hospital at Rayagada, Aditya Birla Medical and Utkal Hospital in Ushapara. One patient is undergoing treatment at SLN Medical College and Hospital, Koraput.
After the cholera was confirmed, tanker water was being provided to the people, the collector said, asking the villagers not to use water from rivers, canals, ponds, wells and tube wells for drinking or other purposes till further orders. has gone.
He said that the district administration has also set up a helpline – 9437448747 for any kind of help from the public.
This tribal-dominated southern Odisha district has a history of being vulnerable to cholera and other water-borne diseases.
The issue was also raised in the state assembly on Tuesday, with Congress Legislature Party leader Narsingh Mishra seeking a statement from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the issue.
Mishra said that the poor tribal people of Rayagada district do not have proper food and live on mango kernels and liquor for which they are dying due to diarrhea and cholera.
Rayagada MLA Makaranda Muduli demanded a long-term solution to the problem of diarrhea and cholera in Kashipur block as many poor people are falling prey to water-borne diseases.
