The CBI had recently registered a case against both the officers. Their houses were also searched on Monday.

The CBI has arrested two Deputy Commissioners of the Customs Department on Tuesday. He is accused of corruption and taking bribes through middlemen while working in the Nhava Sheva import section of Customs in Mumbai.

A customs officer is accused of taking a massage chair worth Rs 3.5 lakh, shoes worth Rs 23,000 and a washing machine worth Rs 61,000 in bribe. On the other hand, another has been accused of sending Rs 50 lakh to his home through hawala.

CBI had searched their houses on May 5.
The CBI said that the names of the accused officers are Dinesh Fuldia and Subhash Chandra. Recently, a case was registered against these two officers. Their houses were also searched on Monday i.e. 5th May.

Helped in taking wrong advantage of Transfer of Residence Scheme
The CBI said that accused Dinesh and Subhash helped custom house agents Sudhir Padekar and Ashish Kamdar to take undue advantage of the Transfer of Residence scheme of the Customs Act.

Under this scheme, it is shown that goods imported from outside are domestic, whose value is less than Rs 5 lakh and the person bringing them to India is going to become a permanent resident of the country.

The loss of crores to the custom department
The CBI said that the custom clearing agent also took advantage of this scheme. He did not levy custom duty on many goods coming from abroad with the help of collection agent and custom officer.

He told that due to this the Customs Department has suffered a loss of crores of rupees. However, he did not specify the exact number of losses. The entire matter is being investigated.
