Only 1 CAA applicant in Assam so far: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: Only one person has so far sought Indian citizenship under CAA in Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Monday and doubled down on his claim that protests against the law were based on “falsehoods“.
Sarma’s disclosure came a day before the Supreme Court hears pleas seeking a stay on CAA rules notified by the Centre last month.
“After so many days of the process of applying for citizenship being rolled out, only one application, from Barak Valley, has been received. But they (protestors) said people will come to the state in trucks,” Sarma said while campaigning for BJP in Sonari, Sibsagar district. He asked those who led the protests to answer now.
Even in Sonari, where there are many migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh, no one has applied for citizenship under CAA, Sarma pointed out.
CAA aims to provide citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They should have entered India on or before Dec 31, 2014.
