Ooty Stinks As Municipality Struggles With Garbage Collection | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Udhagamandalam: As the municipality struggles with garbage collection for the past few weeks, Ooty draws a sorry picture with piles of garbage on the roadsides in residential and commercial areas raising a stench. The situation is such that in some areas garbage collection vehicles have not visited for 10 days.
Residents are fuming as their surroundings burst with garbage, especially wet waste, which is a health hazard. With door-to-door garbage collection becoming increasingly irregular, people are forced to dump their trash on the roadside.
In the USSS building, located in Charing Cross in the town and home to several commercial establishments, a heap of trash is waiting for the municipal garbage van.
Muthukumar, a resident said, “Several other residential areas are also stinking because of the garbage dump.” In Missionary Hill and Old Ooty areas, the roads are filled with trash, and stray dogs and horses are making the situation even worse.
“The municipal authorities are mute to the issue. As the tourist inflow is set to increase in the coming days, we cannot imagine the plight of the town if the situation continues,” J Raman, a shopkeeper, said.
It is not just uncollected garbage, but clogged and open drainage in many places in the town are posing a serious health risk. “It is high time the municipal officials should show some proactive attitude towards the tourist retreat,” M Nirmala, another resident, said.
Ooty municipal health officer Dr G Sreedharan said, “As per government order, commercial establishments with more than 1500 sq. ft area are bound to find a solution for the waste collected by them. But they bribe the sanitary workers to collect their garbage first in the morning.” “Hence, collection in domestic areas is getting held up,” he added.
He said that a meeting was held with the commercial establishments, but the issue could not be pressed too much now due to the Lok Sabha election. “We will find a solution soon,” Sreedharan said.
