Operation Kaveri: India on Thursday (May 5) called off Operation Kaveri, which was launched to evacuate Indian nationals from conflict-torn Sudan. A total of 3,862 people were rescued from conflict-torn Sudan under Operation Kaveri. According to the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the transit facility built in a school in Jeddah has also been closed.

India in Saudi Arabia tweeted, “Today, we closed the transit facility created at International Indian School Jeddah @IndianPage for evacuees from Sudan during #OperationKaveri. The facility provided comfort to over 3500 evacuees.” and served as the nerve center for planning their further movement to India.

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed the return of 47 passengers on board the Indian Air Force (IAF) C130 J flight. “An Indian Air Force C130J aircraft carrying 47 passengers has landed in India. With this arrival, 3862 people have been evacuated from Sudan through Operation Kaveri,” Jaishankar said in a tweet.

Transporting passengers to Port Sudan from various locations across the country under uncertain security conditions was a complex exercise. 17 Indian Air Force flights And through 5 Indian Navy ship sorties, our people were taken to safety from Port Sudan to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. 86 civilians were evacuated through countries bordering Sudan.”

His tweet also read, “The flight to Wadi Sayyidna which was carried out at great risk also deserves respect. Airforce and commercial flights from Jeddah have brought people home. The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launched Operation Kaveri to rescue Indian nationals from conflict-torn Sudan. Fighting broke out between the army and the RSF paramilitary group on 15 April, and hospitals and other services were closed and residential areas turned into war zones. Millions of people are trapped in their homes in the capital, Khartoum, and lack food and water.
