Mobile companies said that apart from getting an easier regulatory regime, new-age internet companies – which ride on their networks – are also eating into their revenue, which is having an impact on network expansion plans and profitability.
Highlighting ‘threats to national security’, telcos said most OTT platforms are app-based businesses, operating in a “near regulatory vacuum” in India, with not many guidelines to govern their operations Are.
The government has already been on target of OTT companies as platforms have refused to part with user data when asked by law-enforcement agencies under specific criminal cases.
