Daltonganj: Regional Research Center at Chianki Birsa Agricultural University ,BAU) has reported wilting of paddy seedlings in several settlements Nilamber Pitamberpur (in the past Leslieganj) block due to less rain this year. He said that the cultivation of maize in the district has also been affected.
Pramod Kumar, senior agricultural scientist at BAU’s Chianki Zonal Research Centre, told TOI, “We have received reports of wilting of paddy seedlings at many places. Palamu District Seoni. The situation in Oriya village and other villages of Nilambar Pitambarpur block is worrying.
Supporting the BAU’s statement, an official of the Palamu District Agriculture Office here said, “The first week of July recorded only 40.2 mm of rain and the month of June recorded 36.1 mm of cumulative rainfall, while in Palamu The normal June average was 152 mm.”
“The loss of paddy and maize crops due to lack of rain could have a disastrous effect on the rural economy, if the rains continue in the district,” Kumar said.
According to rainfall data collected by Ranchi’s India Meteorological Department, Palamu has received 84.9 mm of rain since the onset of monsoon, which is 61 per cent less than its normal average of 218.5 mm in mid-July.
