Islamabad: The shehbaz The Sharif-led government in Pakistan on Wednesday confirmed that it had received a brief from the Ministry of Defense regarding the appointment of the next army chief, days before General Qamar Javed Bajwa is due to retire. The announcement was made to end speculation, claims and counterclaims about the standoff between the government and the military over who will get arguably Pakistan’s most important post after the prime minister after the incumbent bows out on 29 November.
Sharif’s office tweeted, “The Prime Minister’s Office has received a panel of names for the posts of Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of Army Staff. The Prime Minister will decide on the appointments as per the process.”
Last midnight Inter-Services Public Relations said that the list of names of senior generals has been sent to the Defense Ministry. Neither the agency nor the Prime Minister’s Office mentioned the claimants – Lt Gen Asim Munir, Le General Sahir Shamshad MirzaLt. Gen. Azhar Abbas, Lt. Gen. Nauman Mehmood, Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed and Lt. Gen. Mohd Aamir Those who are in seniority order.
Defense Minister Khwaja Mohammad Asif He said the Prime Minister would appoint Gen Bajwa’s successor before leaving for Ankara on November 25. Asif said, “The Prime Minister will leave on Friday evening. Has been a matter of public debate.
The minister denied reports that the summary received by the government had four names on which objections were raised. “This is wrong,” he said, urging the media to refrain from speculation.
After making the choice, the PM will advise President Arif Alvi that the chosen general should be appointed as the next army chief. It remains to be seen whether the President will agree with the government’s decision or send the proposal back for reconsideration.
All this will play out against the backdrop of former PM Imran Khan Possibly resuming their long march to Rawalpindi on November 26, just three days before General Bajwa’s retirement and possibly a day after the appointment of his successor.
PM Sharif has distanced itself from print and broadcast coverage since early November. Earlier this month, he quietly left for a climate change conference in Egypt, then arrived in London on a private visit and stayed there for a week before returning to the country.
On arrival, he was diagnosed with Covid, thus restricting his movement till the PM’s house. He is understood to have held meetings with people who play a key role in influencing important decisions.
Government sources said Gen Bajwa met Shehbaz before the Defense Ministry released its summary and “all matters were sorted out”. His meeting with former President Asif Ali Zardari and discussions with his exiled elder brother and former PM nawaz sharif Helped break the impasse over new appointments in London, he said.
