Pakistan: Joint investigation team summons Imran Khan for May 9 attack on Jinnah

Khan, who heads the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been asked to appear before the JIT at Qila Gujjar police headquarters in Lahore at 4 pm. He has been called for questioning in a case registered at Sarwar Road police station against the attack.

On 9 May, arsonists set Jinnah House (Corps Commander’s House) on fire following anti-government protests against the arrest of former Prime Minister Khan.

A large number of PTI party workers stormed Jinnah House on 9 May and set it on fire after ransacking it.

A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) set up by the interim government of Punjab to probe the May 9 arson attacks on Jinnah House and Askari Corporate Tower in Lahore summoned Khan on Tuesday, sources told Geo News.

Khan’s arrest led to several days of street protests, followed by an exodus of PTI leaders, as security forces launched a crackdown against the party following attacks on civilian and military institutions.

At least eight people were killed in violent protests in the country.

Violent protesters torched a stationary aircraft in Mianwali district of Punjab, Khan’s hometown, and attacked the ISI building in Faisalabad.

The mob first stormed the Army Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. More than a dozen military installations were vandalized or set on fire during two days of violent protests, according to police.

The JIT, headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Kamran Adil, has asked the former prime minister – who was removed from office through a no-confidence motion in April last year – to appear before the probe body at 4 pm.

The JIT will question Khan in connection with the May 9 riots. The Punjab Home Department has constituted 10 separate JITs to probe the attacks and violent protests that took place on May 9, which was termed as “Black Day” by the Army.

The report said that the ousted prime minister was named in several FIRs lodged at various police stations in the province.

Reports said that after receiving the notice from the JIT, Khan consulted his legal team, but it is yet to be decided whether the PTI chairman will appear before the probe body.
