New Delhi: The new parliament buildingIt is being finalized, which is likely to be inaugurated in the last week of this month. The inauguration will be part of a series of events and programs organized to celebrate the ninth anniversary of the Modi government that assumed office on May 26, 2014.
While there is no official word on the date of inauguration, sources said the government has directed all agencies involved with the project to complete the remaining works before May 28. He said, though both the Houses and the courtyard are fully complete and gardening work is being executed on a fast-track mode, it will take a few more weeks for the offices of ministers and party leaders to be ready. But all these would be completed before the monsoon session of Parliament, he insisted.
On Tuesday evening, several high powered earth movers were brought in to clear the areas around the new building. Also, government agencies and private entities associated with the project have increased their manpower deployed at the site. Sources said top officials of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) also spent a few hours at the project last week. Cleaning of civil structures has also started. “The work has been going on round the clock for the past few days as we have a strict deadline,” said an official.
Sources also said that a panel has been formed to decide the invitees to the mega launch event.
TOI had reported on April 28 that the new building is likely to be inaugurated much before the monsoon session Parliament Noting that the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) had invited tenders for “Flower Arrangement and Decoration” of the building at an estimated cost of Rs 13.48 lakh.
The week from May 26 to May 31 holds great significance for the ruling dispensation. While Modi took oath as PM on May 26 in his first term, his second term began on May 30, 2019. Veer Savarkar’s birth anniversary is on 28 May.
The foundation stone of the new building, spread over 65,000 square metres, was laid by the PM on December 10, 2020, and the mammoth project is on track to be completed in two and a half years. The new building has two large halls designated for the functioning of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha; a library; A state-of-the-art Constitution Hall apart from MPs’ offices and committee rooms for meetings.
Tata Projects had won the project with a bid of Rs 862 crore and the government informed Parliament in September 2020 that the cost would escalate to Rs 971 crore.
