Patna: Patna Meteorological Centre was awarded the title of ‘best performing meteorological centre’ in the country for the year 2023 by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at a function held in New Delhi on Friday on the eve of World Meteorological Day.
Patna Meteorological Centre was chosen for the award after a rigorous evaluation process in recognition of its dedication to advancing meteorological research, innovation and accuracy in forecasting and public outreach.The meteorological centre was awarded by the Union earth sciences minister Kiren Rijiju in presence of department’s secretary M Ravichandran and director general of meteorology, IMD, Mritunjay Mohapatra. Ashish Kumar Singh, senior scientist of Patna Met office received the award in presence of senior officials from various ministries and departments.
Established as the Patna Meteorological Observatory in 1867 by the British Core of Engineering, the centre has evolved significantly over the years. Since its relocation to Civil Aerodrome Patna in 1949 and subsequent upgrade to a meteorological centre in 1974, it has continuously strived for excellence.
The meteorological centre of Patna and its sub-offices at Gaya, Purnia, Bhagalpur, and Valmiki Nagar provide weather services to the people of the state.
