Vijayawada

The NTR district police on Saturday invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act against ganja smuggler Nelaturi Durga for allegedly supplying the drug to smugglers and students.

Police Commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata issued orders to this effect. Durga was involved in 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the last few years.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vishal Gunni said Durga was shifted to Rajamahendravaram Central Prison.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Northern Zone, Ch. Ravikant said that Durga alias Poolakka alias Poolami was supplying ganja to students, daily wage laborers and youths in the guise of selling flowers in Nunna, Ajit Singh Nagar, Patamata, Bhavanipuram and other areas of the city. Cases are registered against Durga in four police stations of the commissionerate.

Durga’s sister Jonnalagadda Saramma was shunted out of the commissionerate for her involvement in ganja smuggling cases, and was booked under the PD Act a few days back.
