Pen Cap Stuck In Boy’s Lung Removed In Nick Of Time | Rajkot News – Times of India

Rajkot: In an unusual medical emergency, a pen cap got lodged into the lung of a 12-year-old boy who accidentally swallowed it, posing a life-threatening situation.
However, doctors successfully removed the pen cap, giving the boy a new lease of life. The boy was admitted to a private trust-run HJ Doshi Hospital at 10:30pm on Saturday in a critical condition.X-ray showed a 20mm long pen cap stuck in his left lung, and doctors decided to operate on him immediately. He was coughing and his oxygen level was rapidly decreasing.
The foreign object was removed using forceps and a flexible video bronchoscope. According to the doctors, the boy had swallowed the pen cap while playing at a coaching class but did not inform his parents out of fear. An hour later, he began coughing uncontrollably and finally told his parents, who first took him to a nearby doctor who referred him to a bigger hospital.
Dr. Brijesh Koyani, an interventional pulmonologist, told TOI, “This is a rare case. Generally, if children swallow something solid it gets stuck in the esophagus. It’s easy to remove and the condition is not life-threatening. If some foreign object goes inside the stomach, it may pass through stool, but this one was life-threatening and he had to be operated on at midnight.”
The doctors noted that the pen cap had holes on both sides, which allowed the boy to breathe. Otherwise, he would have fainted and his condition would have become even more critical.
The surgery was performed by doctors, including Dr. Avni Medpara (physician), Dr. Ankit Dadhaniya (anesthetist), and Dr. Payal Dangar (ENT specialist).
