The Central Government on Wednesday withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill. The government will instead bring a new bill for personal data protection in cyberspace. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav proposed to withdraw the bill, which was passed by voice vote.

After the bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha, the opposition opposed many of its provisions. After this, on 11 December 2019, it was sent to the Joint Committee for review. Reports quoted official sources as saying that the committee had suggested 81 changes. After this the government decided to withdraw the bill.

what next: The government said the committee proposed 81 changes and made 15 separate recommendations. We have considered withdrawing the existing bill and bringing a new bill. Which is right from the point of view of joint committee and legal framework. That is, now the way for the new bill has been cleared.

Why Withdraw: After the bill was introduced in Parliament in 2019, Congress and Trinamool had said that this bill violates the fundamental rights of the people. When this bill becomes law, the government will get the freedom to get personal data of the people. The government will be able to get this data by giving reasons like national security. The bill was sent to the committee for review and then it was withdrawn after seeing many changes suggested.
