Pixel 4a 4G variant loses official support from Google

Google has officially ended support for Pixel 4a but only for the 4G variant that was launched in markets like India back in 2021.

If you own a Pixel 4a smartphone that does not support 5G networks, it is time to upgrade. Google has officially ended software support for the 4G variant of the Pixel 4a that had launched in markets like India. The latest September 2023 patch did not come to the Pixel 4a model, which means that Google has met its claimed promise and the August 2023 update was the last that the Pixel 4a will get.

Google had a rigid software policy for its older Pixel models, but recently it was reported that the company’s Tensor-powered Pixel phones will get up to 5 years of OS updates and six years of security updates. This will invariably put the Pixels at par with Apple’s iPhone support and one more than Samsung.

The Pixel 4a came out for markets like India where 4G networks are still prevalent and people didn’t want to spend big on the premium Pixel flagship phones. Having the Pixel 4a did not help Google’s case to increase demand but a surprising price cut made it possible for people to buy the Pixel 4a for under Rs 30,000 which did the trick for the company, helping them clear the unsold stock.

The 5G variant of Pixel 4a has already got the Android 14 beta version, which will be its last OS upgrade but one more year of security updates.

The smartphone features a 5.81-inch full HD+ OLED display, with a single punch-hole camera cutout at the top left, and a 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio.

The Pixel 4a launched in India was powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset, along with 6GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. It also has Live Caption support, as well as an Always-On display that will make use of the low power consumption of OLED displays to give the added feature without draining the battery.

The Pixel 4a had a single 12.2MP rear camera with a wide-angle lens and OIS support. The compact design of the Pixel 4a made it popular among people who like small-sized phones.
