PM Modi called for increased mutual cooperation to deal with the threat posed by the group, saying, “Terrorism has become a threat to regional and global peace.”

PM Modi said, “We have to fight together against terrorism, be it in any form and any form.” He emphasized that there should be no double standards in fighting terrorism.

The virtual summit, chaired by India, was also attended by the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran.

While chairing the summit, PM Modi also discussed various global challenges.

He said that the food, fuel and fertilizer crisis is a big challenge for all the countries of the world beset by disputes, tensions and pandemics and united efforts will have to be made to deal with it.

On the situation in Afghanistan, PM Modi said that India’s concerns and expectations regarding that country are similar to those of most SCO countries.

The Prime Minister said that the SCO has emerged as a major forum for peace, prosperity and development for Eurasia.

India’s thousands of years old cultural and people-to-people ties with this region (Eurasia) are a living testimony to our shared heritage, he said.

He said, as the Chair of the SCO, India has made sustained efforts to take our multifaceted cooperation to new heights.

PM Modi said that India has established five pillars of cooperation within the SCO which include startups and innovation, traditional medicine, youth empowerment, digital inclusion and shared Buddhist heritage.

He said that India supports the proposal to reform and modernize the SCO.

He said, I am happy that Iran is going to join the SCO family as a new member.

The Prime Minister also welcomed the signing of the Letter of Commitment for Belarus’ SCO membership.

Several signature events were held under the chairmanship of India with the intention of further deepening people-to-people ties.

India’s association with the SCO began in 2005 as an observer country. It became a full member country of the SCO at the Astana summit in 2017.

India has shown keen interest in deepening its security-related cooperation with the SCO and its Regional Anti-Terrorism Framework (RATS), particularly on issues related to security and defence.

The SCO was founded in 2001 at a summit in Shanghai by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

India and Pakistan became full members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization or SCO in 2017.
