Police Cut Vehicle Duties As Fuel Runs Low, Chief Seeks Fin Aid | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: The financial crisis in the state is taking a toll on the police department as well. The police chief has written to the state government seeking an immediate financial assistance of Rs 28 crore pointing out that the arrears pending to fuel companies and petrol pumps have risen significantly.
Due to fuel shortage, the department has cut down the vehicle operations under each police station. There are reports that this has even hit the investigations into several cases. As per instructions from top officers, only one vehicle is being operated at each police station.
The police stations have been allotted at least two vehicles for which the government has allotted 200 litres of fuel per month for each vehicle. However, there is no restriction on the fuel consumption for the vehicles used by high-ranking police officers.
The department has its own fueling stations only in major cities like Thiruvananthapuram. In other districts, the police vehicles get fuel from selected fuel stations and the bills are settled on a monthly basis. In several districts, these fuel stations have now stopped the fuel supply due to mounting arrears.
The department has already used Rs 31 crore out of the Rs 44 crore provided to it at the beginning of this year to clear dues. It has been surviving with the remaining Rs 13 crore for the past few months.
The police chief has also sought immediate financial assistance for repairing the vehicles lying in various workshops. The department has been facing an acute shortage of vehicles due to lack of proper and timely maintenance.
