Police data shows 9% rise in suicide cases in 2022 Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police data has revealed that there has been a 9% increase in suicide cases across the state in 2022 as compared to 2021. The increase in suicide cases in 2021 as compared to 2020 was around 3%.
While 5,482 people died allegedly by suicide in the state in 2020. Rose As per the data, 5,649 in 2021 and 6,140 in 2022.
Police said that in most of the cases the victims were in the age group of 25-40 years and were the sole breadwinners of their families. Prolonged and unresolvable stress over family discord reportedly prompted the suicides. In some cases, the victims were students who ended their lives after quarrels with their female friends or failed love affairs.

Experts say suicides can be prevented with timely and targeted intervention. “Police should properly analyze the data of suicide victims – particular age groups, working or unemployed, young or old people, married or unmarried and students. If more students are committing suicide, the government should find out the reasons and initiate preventive measures targeting the particular group. If married women are ending their lives, we should find out the reasons,” said Pune-based senior psychiatrist Soumitra Pathare, who recently conducted a workshop for police in the city on the topic of suicide prevention and investigation .
Uma Shankar Dash, Additional Commissioner of Police, said most suicides are preceded by verbal or behavioral warning signs and symptoms. “Many people talk to friends and relatives or doctors about their wish to die. About 50% of suicide victims have a pre-existing mental illness. Suicides can be prevented if the issues troubling patients can be addressed properly and in a timely manner,” Dash said.
