Chandigarh:

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sanctioned Rs 20 crore for installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations in border villages to keep a close watch on drones and movement of smugglers. A senior police officer gave this information on Wednesday.

Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla also said that Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav has announced a reward of Rs one lakh to anyone giving information about drone activity leading to recovery of arms or narcotics.

Mr Shukla was at Khasa, Amritsar for a joint coordination-cum-review meeting with Atul Fuljele, Inspector General (IG) of BSF’s Punjab Frontier Headquarters in Jalandhar district, according to a statement issued here.

Attended by senior officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Punjab Police, the meeting aimed at strengthening border security to prevent smuggling.

DIG, Border Range, Punjab Police, Narinder Bhargava, and DIG, Firozpur Range, Ranjit Singh Dhillon, four other DIGs and four commandants of BSF attended the talks.

Mr Shukla called for greater coordination between the two armies to counter drone operations along the borders of Punjab.

He asked the Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) of the border districts to intensify the police force as a second line of defense which would help in preventing the collection of narcotics dropped by criminals through drones.

Shri Shukla asked the BSF officials to share information on the movements of suspicious persons with the Punjab Police so that they could keep a close watch on their movements.

The Special DGP directed the Commissioners of Police and SSPs to increase outposts in their respective jurisdictions, especially during night time.

He also proposed to activate Village Defense Committees in the border areas. Mr. Shukla said, “These committees will act as the eyes and ears of the police and will complement the efforts of the Punjab Police to wipe out drugs, terrorists and gangsters from the border state.”
