Rahul, Akshar will not play in New Zealand white-ball series; Suryakumar, Ishan included for Australia Test | Cricket News – Times of India

New Delhi: Batsman KL Rahul and all rounder Akshar Patel New Zealand will skip the white-ball home series due to family commitments, but will return for the Australia Test, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday.
The newly formed selection committee has announced several teams under the leadership of Chetan Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav Included in Test team for Australia series Ishan Kishan Also named in the Indian squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India will play New Zealand T20I under the leadership of Hardik Pandya as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will not play in the shortest format.
The board announced the squad for the first two Tests against Australia which also includes Ravindra Jadeja, whose inclusion in the squad will depend on fitness.
Prithvi ShawWho recently scored the second highest Ranji score – 379 against Assam – has also been included for the NZ T20Is.
The selection committee could not ignore Surya’s current form as he got a second call-up to the Test team. He was earlier covering during the Test series against New Zealand in Kanpur in 2021.
Whether he will get a chance in the playing XI cannot be predicted but his technique against spinners on Indian pitches is exemplary. With Rishabh Pant not in the mix, India are missing that X-factor in the middle order which can take the game away in a season.
So Surya’s inclusion in the 17-man squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a welcome move.
Surya recently played two Ranji matches for Mumbai, scoring 90 against Hyderabad and 95 against Saurashtra in a short span of time. He has played 79 first class matches with 5549 runs at an average of around 45.
As far as Ishaan’s selection is concerned, it was more or less straight forward as he is Pant’s choice for a similar replacement for the left-handed batsman.
Starting with the first ODI on January 18 in Hyderabad, the New Zealand series will consist of 3 ODIs and a T20I each. The first Test against Australia will be played in Nagpur from February 9 to 13 while the second Test will be played in Delhi from February 17 to 21.
