LUCKNOW: Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are set to contest Lok Sabha elections from Amethi and Rae Bareli seats respectively. While the official announcement is likely in a few days, Pradeep Singhal, district Congress president from Amethi on Wednesday confirmed it to TOI after attending a high-level meeting in Delhi.
“Yes, it’s correct, both will contest from Amethi and Rae Bareli,” said Singhal while responding to a query from TOI.Singhal recently returned from Delhi after attending a party meeting on Monday.
We had gone to Delhi for a meeting chaired by the party’s top leadership. The party has asked us to start preparing for the election, which we have,” said the 52-year-old Amethi leader, who joined Congress in 2004.
“Soon the party will officially announce the name of Rahul Gandhi from Amethi and Priyanka Gandhi from Rae Bareli,” says Pradeep who became Congress Amethi unit president in 2019, and contested assembly polls in 2022 from Tiloi constituency. He stood third with 21,978 votes. His wife Sunita Singhal (50) is former block pramukh from Bahadurpur of Amethi.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi represented Amethi in Parliament from 2004 till 2019, when he lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani. He won Wayanad constituency in Kerala back in 2019 and is MP from there.
Priyanka will make her electoral debut from Rae Bareli, the seat from where her mother Sonia Gandhi had been winning since 2004. Before that, Indira Gandhi won the seat in 1971 and 1980.
