Rahul Gandhi: Opposition to Raga petition seeking stay on conviction | Surat News – Times of India

Surat: BJP MLA from Surat West seat Purnesh Modi on Tuesday lodged his objection in reply to Congress leader Rahul GandhiPetition to stay conviction in defamation case Gandhi was convicted in a criminal defamation case by the Chief Judicial Magistrate on 23 March. The case was filed by Modi in 2019. A day later Gandhi was disqualified as an MP from the Lok Sabha.
Modi’s lawyer Ketan Reshamwala told TOI, “We have placed on record the judgment of the trial court convicting Rahul Gandhi and the observations of the trial court.”
Modi was present in the court and filed a 30-page affidavit opposing the plea to stay Gandhi’s conviction. Gandhi had filed an appeal against his conviction on April 3 and it was to be heard on April 13.
Modi made his remark during a rally in Karnataka in 2019 “How can all thieves be surnamed Modi?” A criminal defamation case was filed against Gandhi for and said that the trial court treated him harshly.
Gandhi’s plea states, “A parliamentarian is expected to be cautious and critical, and the trial court’s view that a parliamentarian should be given the highest punishment because of his position, is wholly unjustified and clearly than is unjust.”
