Mangaluru: Former minister and veteran Congress leader B Ramnath Rai, who faced defeat in the assembly elections from Bantwal, announced his retirement from electoral politics. Opinion lost to BJP Rajesh U Naik,
Rai said on Tuesday, ‘I will be active in party activities and will not contest elections. However, I will abide by the decision of the high command. I am 71 years old and there was some disagreement in the party regarding my candidature. I have never worked against the party and will abide by all the decisions of the party high command. The party has given me many opportunities over the years.
Rai said he was confident of winning the election as the situation was favorable to the Congress. “Somewhere there has been a setback, and I will introspect on the reason for my defeat,” he said, and observed that compared to the last election, the BJP’s victory margin has shrunk
When asked whether he would contest the upcoming elections Parliament Election, Rai said “I will not contest the election. For me the party is paramount and I will do whatever the high command wants me to do.”
Appreciating the party’s performance in the state, Rai said, “The BJP has not got a majority in the state for so many years. He formed a coalition government with JD(S) and later with independent candidates and through ‘Operation Lotus’. Voters did not support BJP. BJP will never come to power again. The Congress will also win the Lok Sabha elections.”
He appealed to the party workers to be ready for this District Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat and Lok Sabha elections. “We accept the defeat in the district but will work hard to get back the seats as our party is in power in the state. The ‘guarantees’ of the Congress will be implemented immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.
