Prohibitory orders are still in force and internet services remain suspended amid heavy deployment of police force. Violence-hit Rishra town in West Bengal’s Hooghly district On April 5, the police said.

Police said that there was no incident of violence or arson from anywhere in the district.

“Things are under control. There is no incident of any disturbance from anywhere in the district. We have our forces deployed at important junctions and areas. Trying to get in position.” A senior police officer from the Chandernagore Police Commissionerate told PTI,

He also said that several people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in Sunday’s violence.

He said a decision on withdrawing the prohibitory orders and lifting the suspension of internet services in the area would be taken later after an assessment of the situation.

Clashes were reported in Rishra town on Sunday evening during a Ram Navami procession, in which BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh and the party’s Pursurah MLA Biman Ghosh were present.

The MLA was injured and has been hospitalised.

Incidents of vandalism were also reported in parts of nearby Serampore town, following which prohibitory orders were imposed and internet services were suspended.

He spoke to senior police officers and local people and assured them that action would be taken against the miscreants.
