Rare spine surgery brings life back to two frail men. Lucknow News – Times of India

Lucknow: Doctor of Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) successfully carried out a complex surgical procedure on the spine anterior lumbar interbody fusion ,alif) with deformity correction on two debilitated patients who were not able to walk and had excruciating pain.
RMLIMS claimed that these surgeries are the first successful cases of their kind performed in any government institution in India, including the famous All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
The surgery was performed by faculty in Neurosurgery RMLIMS, the only faculty with dual training (both Neuro and Orthopedic Spine), Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh In collaboration with Dr. Sanjit of the Department of Urology, Dr. VipinDr. Krishna and Dr. Samiksha from the Department of Anesthesia.
Dr Singh said that ALIF is a complex surgery which involves making an incision in the lower abdomen and accessing the spine from the front. This technique is also used for lumbar disc replacement. It is an advanced and anatomically precise approach for spondylolisthesis and adult degenerative spinal deformities as there is maximum restoration of normal spinal alignment which is not possible in conventional technique which involves incision from posterior side.
“In ALIF, patients can be quickly mobilized and returned to work,” he said. The first patient, a 65-year-old woman, had undergone surgery for a slipped disc in her lower back 9 years earlier. Four years ago, the screws used to hold the disc in place had failed, and he began to experience severe back pain and numbness in his legs. She was unable to walk or stand for long periods of time, and had put on a lot of weight. She underwent three stages of surgery to correct the slip and deformity. After the surgery, she was able to walk and bear weight again.
The second patient is a 54 year old female Gorakhpur, She had a high-grade slipped disc in her lower back and had severe back pain and numbness in her legs. She performed surgery with minimally invasive procedure called ALIF (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) and Posterior Fusion. The next day she was walking comfortably and was discharged from the hospital on 13 June.
After surgery, both patients reported significant improvement in their pain and function. He was able to walk without any pain, and he was able to return to his normal activities.
Dr. Singh said that the success of these surgeries is a testimony to the skill and expertise of the doctors at RMLIMS. He added that there are only less than five spinal surgeons trained for this procedure in the entire country.
He also claims that he is the only complex spine surgeon trained in this technique in the UK and that his department is the first and only department in the country to offer this service.
“The success of these surgeries shows that government hospitals are capable of providing world-class healthcare,” said Deepak Kumar Singh, head of the department of neurosurgery.
