Renault Nissan alliance reiterates commitment to India market with 4 new products | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: French-Japanese auto MNC Renault Nissan is planning a fresh product offensive for the Indian market. Top company executives have announced two new products each for both Nissan and Renault to be produced from the RNAIPL (Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd) factory in Oragadam Chennai.
Speaking at a press meet on Wednesday, Luca de Meo, CEO, Renault Group said: “We’re extending our lineup in India with a five-seater C-segment SUV and a 7-seater C-segment SUV each for both Renault and Nissan.” The new products will be on the alliance’s next generation compact module family (CMF) with high level of localisation. The alliance’s tech centre Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India (RNTBCI) is working on adapting, developing and localising the platform. “We are bringing a platform that has been localised in South America, Turkey, Morocco and now India,” said de Meo.
The new products are part of the alliance’s new focus on India. “India will be more than ever at the heart of the alliance’s operations and not just geographically because it is midway between France and Japan,” said Renault Nissan Alliance chairman Jean-Dominique Senard. “In India this is the new era of the alliance,” he added.
The fresh investment of $600-700 million announced last year will be deployed for this new range of products and the new platform localisation will be used to increase the sophistication of the Chennai operation, he explained. The new products are both for domestic as well as export markets.
For Nissan, the India plans tie in with its medium term global strategy. Said Makoto Uchida, Nissan president & CEO: “Apart from the two new products – a five and seven seater SUV like Renault – Nissan is looking at CNG and ethanol fuel options and will further develop India as an export hub with the medium term target of 100,000 units of export.”
Reiterating the alliance’s commitment to Tamil Nadu, Senard said that the state was chosen for its “dynamism and industrial climate. With 45% of India’s auto exports and 35% of India’s auto component exports, Tamil Nadu is investing heavily in the future,” added Senard. “We are excited about the future of the alliance in India and committed to investing in this market,” he added.
So far, the alliance has invested $1.8 billion in India with 5000 people working at the Oragadam factory and another 10,000 at the RNTBCI centre. Currently the Nissan Magnite and Sunny and Renault Kwid, Kiger and Triber are made at the plant. The plant has a capacity of 440,000 units a year with two vehicle lines. So far the alliance has produced 2.7 million vehicles, exported 1.2 million units and manufactured 4.4 million powertrain units.
