Republican primary: Nikki Haley closes gap with Donald Trump in New Hampshire – Times of India

Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley has significantly closed the gap with former President Donald Trump in the upcoming first primary in New Hampshire, now just two weeks away.
According to an exclusive USA TODAY/Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll, Trump is leading in New Hampshire with 46%, followed by Haley at 26%. Other contenders include former New Jersey governor Chris Christie at 12%, and Florida governor Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in single digits, at 8% and 2%, respectively.
This poll indicates a notable shift in the political landscape. Trump’s current 20-percentage-point lead over Haley is substantial, yet it represents a decrease from a 30-point lead in a previous poll conducted in October. This change suggests a growing momentum for Haley in the crucial early stages of the Republican primary race.
In a CNN poll conducted with the University of New Hampshire, Trump was seven percentage points ahead of Haley, down from a 22-point lead back in November.
Chris Christie, known for his vocal opposition to Trump, has seen a 6-point increase in support over the past three months. However, there have been calls for Christie to withdraw from the race, potentially to bolster Haley’s position as the primary alternative to Trump. If Christie were to exit the race, projections suggest that a fair number of his supporters might shift their allegiance to Haley. In such a scenario, Trump’s lead over Haley would be reduced to 47%-32%, bringing the race closer to a potential upset.
These developments are part of the dynamic and evolving political landscape as the 2024 primaries approach. The shifting support among the Republican candidates reflects the party’s ongoing deliberations about its direction and leadership. As the primary season progresses, these poll numbers could be a critical indicator of the party’s trajectory and the potential challenges facing Trump’s candidacy.
Judge Judy’s ruling: Haley for President
Haley’s campaign blasted out a mass email on Tuesday announcing an unconventional endorsement: the support of Judge Judith Sheindlin, better known as TV’s “Judge Judy,” who meted out no-nonsense justice from the bench in her long-running reality daytime courtroom show.
Calling Haley “whip smart,” Sheindlin, 81, said, “I truly think she can restore America and believe she is the future of this great nation.”
